What is a deskless classroom?A deskless classroom is a classroom with no individual student desks or chairs! The students have no assigned seating and do not sit at a desk when they do their work. Instead, the students have multiple options of seating/classroom scenery when doing their work daily by choosing to sit at one of the table options in our classroom, sitting in the beanbags using a clipboard, or laying on the carpet. However, a deskless classroom also promotes movement, which means that the students are often up and moving around the classroom learning in hands on ways.

Why have a deskless classroom? |
Ways of learning have changed from having a silent classroom with students doing paper and pencil work. Today, students are encouraged to discuss what they know, ask their peers questions, teach each other, and experiment with all subjects in hands on ways. Desks can get in the way of this style of learning. Without desks, students are able to be more versatile in what groups they work in daily, communicate more effectively, and create more efficiently.

What are the benefits? |
There are so many benefits to having a deskless classroom. Students are able to be up close and personal with their learning by putting their sole focus on the tasks that they are given. Additionally, students who are kinesthetic learners are able to work in an environment that fits their needs and encourages their ways of learning. More activities are able to take place during center rotations due to the open space. Teamwork in the classroom is more easy to engage in which develops a higher classroom community and an overall character building atmosphere. Overall, the students are more engaged as they are participating in student centered learning which caters to the needs of today's learners. Deskless is the way to go!
